Adam - corneal recipient, VIC
Adam was diagnosed with Keratoconus, which is a condition that causes the cornea (the clear surface on the front of the eye) to gradually thin and bulge into a cone shape, resulting in significant visual impairment.
Because of his vision impairment, Adam had to leave a career he dearly loved as a TV camera operator. He adapted to a life with limited vision. He was able to make out shapes but couldn’t read anymore.
“It’s very disheartening to know you are losing your sight. It was such a huge let down and I thought, what am I going to do with my life?”
After months of doctors' appointments, Adam was placed on the waitlist for his first cornea transplant and waited 6-8 months. When the day finally came for his transplant, Adam shared, “It was quite emotional. The first time I had a shower without the patch on my eye, I had a shave in the shower. I could actually see the hair bristles in the shaver, and I burst into tears. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d seen that.”
Adam received another corneal transplant a few years later. He’s started his own photography business and recently resumed the career he loves as a camera operator.
