The Australian government is now operating in accordance with the Guidance on Caretaker Conventions, pending the outcome of the 2025 federal election.
Archer was diagnosed with Alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency, a rare genetic condition affecting both his liver and lungs, at 3 months old.
Archer endured endless hospital admissions, procedures and operations. In 2018, he suffered a life-threatening bleed and was placed on the transplant list. As his family was preparing to move from Wodonga to Melbourne whilst awaiting his transplant, the life-saving phone call came through.
Within hours, Archer had a successful liver transplant at the Royal Children’s Hospital. His mother Nikki says her heart is completely full, and that their family is treasuring every moment with Archer.
‘I cannot stop staring at him. His skin and eyes are no longer yellow, and his body isn’t swollen. His smile is heart-melting, and I could listen to that giggle all day,’ Nikki says. ‘We wouldn’t be here without an amazing family making the selfless decision to donate in their deepest grief. While we are celebrating Archer’s second chance, they are going through their most horrendous of times.
‘I do not think a ‘thank you’ to this hero family will ever be enough.’
