Tania - donor, VIC

“Mum was always trying to help people when she was alive, so this would be her final gift, in a sense,” Tania's daughter Shania said.

Deteriorating eyesight was something Shania’s mum Tania lived with during her many years of illness.

When Tania passed away a donation nurse spoke to Shania about donation. She was surprised to learn that her mother’s corneas could be donated.

Though Shania and her mum had never discussed organ and tissue donation, Shania reflected on her mum’s giving nature. She knew her mum would have wanted to give the gift of sight to others who also struggled.

“Mum was always trying to help people when she was alive, so this would be her final gift, in a sense,” Shania said.

“Learning how scarce organ and tissue donations are, and the fact that from mum’s donation people could regain their sight, I think it’s what she would have wanted.”

“I like to see it as though she’s still seeing the world, in a way. It's bittersweet, but at least 2 people have their sight now and they don’t have to struggle anymore.”
