Core Family Donation Conversation (FDC) workshop

The core FDC workshop is a two-day workshop that provides training to a range of health professionals working in organ and tissue donation.

The workshop provides increased knowledge, understanding and skills in having conversations about death and donation. The aim is to help ensure that families are provided with enough information to make an informed donation decision.

Workshop content

The workshop explores:

  • specific elements of family care and communication
  • the range of reactions experienced by families who receive catastrophic news
  • the key factors in the process, timing and sequence of the donation conversation
  • best practices for supporting families in grief and in the donation conversation
  • strategies to support informed and enduring decision making about donation.

Who should attend?

If you are a DonateLife donation specialist, you are required to attend as part of your role. Other healthcare workers involved in the donation process may also attend, particularly senior medical and nursing staff who are involved in donation conversations with families. If you are a nurse wishing to complete the cFDC workshop we recommend you complete the IDAT workshop prior.

If you are an Intensive care medical trainee, you are required by the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand (CICM) to complete this workshop as part of mandatory training requirements.

What do I need to do before attending the workshop?

If you are a medical trainee, before attending you must complete the CICM elearning program entitled 'Brain Death and Organ Donation'.

All attendees should also read and understand the ANZICS Statement on Death and Organ Donation (Edition 4 2019).

Who will teach the workshop?

Our workshops are led by a national group of specialist trainers, including experienced DonateLife donation specialists, intensive care specialists and grief counsellors.

The workshop is regularly reviewed in consultation with the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society, the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand and the Australian College of Critical Care Nurses to make sure the material is current and continues to meet training needs.
